OUR STORY

People of color, particularly African Americans, feel the stigma more keenly. In a race-conscious society, some don’t want to be perceived as having yet another deficit.

WHAT IT MEANS:

We use dreams as the driving force of growth and change in our real lives. We empower those who lack resources due to their minority status.

MISSION STATEMENT

Dream Counseling's mission is to help empower individuals that have lost hope due to the hardships, difficulties, traumas, and stress that life has thrown at them. The goal is to help individuals find light when they feel trapped in darkness.

Dream Counseling understands that some individuals may have the odds stacked against them, but we will help you navigate through those barriers to increase mood stability, coping skills, and hope. Let’s start dreaming again!

HOW IT STARTED

The concept of DREAM came about when Lolita was a high school student prepare to go to college. As a first-generation college student, she didn’t have many resources in her family or surrounding community about what to expect, how to choose a major, and any other helpful tips.

Lolita realized that being a young African American woman that she was not exposed to a lot of resources that some of her counterparts would brag about in school.

She knew then that many young men and women from marginalized communities and those that were considered minorities were lacking exposure to resources and opportunities that could drastically shape their future.

With no opportunities to network with people who had their foot and the door in different industries or gaining insight into academia from parents and family, it can be quite difficult to see the possibilities of the future.

Later, when Lolita started her work as a clinical therapist, she worked with individuals with low socioeconomical status. When Lolita started her own practice, she realized that she could bring the concept of DREAM into her work as a therapist.

Her work includes providing communities with mental health support and resources where they are scarce or unknown. She also encourages her clients to dream again by helping them to restore hope in overcoming their mental health struggles, learning to put one foot in front of the other and live life again.
